print single instance of identical values in multiple rows; multiple instances of unique values ?

My problem is this. I am joining two or more mysql tables by ISBN. The first table is title (a single record per ISBN) and the second is author (sometimes multiple records per ISBN). As you will see if you scroll to the bottom of the page, I want to display each title once and every author once before moving to the next title. However, I have not been able to find a way to keep the title from displaying multiple times. So, display should be: Title1 Author1 Author2 Author3 Title2 Author1 Author2 Author3 Samples of what I have been using follow. I have tried also "Group by" in mysql. The problem is that the query then returns only 1 of the authors. And Select Distinct seems not to provide what I am looking for either. I assume the answer is in how one loops through the array? --Greg The following query: -------------------------------------------- $result = mysql_query ("SELECT Title.ISBN, Title.Main_Title, Title.Sub_Title, Author.Last_Name, Author.First_Name, Topic.Bible, Topic.Hebrew_Bible FROM Title, Author, Topic WHERE Title.ISBN=Author.ISBN AND Author.ISBN=Topic.ISBN AND Topic.Bible LIKE 'Y' "); ------------------------------------------- Yields the following rows: 0195099702 "Why Ask My Name" Anonymity and Identity in Biblical Narrative Reinhartz Adele Y 031221250X New Stories for Old Biblical Patterns in the Novel Fisch Harold Y Y 031221250X New Stories for Old Biblical Patterns in the Novel Jay Elisabeth Y Y 031221250X New Stories for Old Biblical Patterns in the Novel Jasper David Y Y 0761811664 Re-Thinking Biblical Story and Myth Critical Essays on Biblical Interpretation Rothstein Arnold Y Y The following script: --------------------------------------------- if ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { do { print ("
Return to Staff Home Page
ISBN: "); print $row["ISBN"]; print ("
Title: "); print $row["Main_Title"]; print ("
Subtitle: "); print $row["Sub_Title"]; print ("
Series: "); print $row["Series_Title"]; print ("
Publisher: "); print $row["Publisher"]; print (" ("); print $row["Pub_Place"]; print (")"); print ("
Date of Publication: "); print $row["Pub_Date"]; print ("
Price: "); print $row["Price"]; print ("
Author or Editor Name: "); print $row["Last_Name"]; print (", "); print $row["First_Name"]; print ("
"); print ("
Topics:
"); if ($row["Bible"] == "Y") echo "Bible
"; if ($row["Hebrew_Bible"] == "Y") echo "Hebrew Bible / Old Testament
"; print ("

"); } while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)); } else {print "Sorry, no records were found! Click Here to return to Staff Home Page";} ----------------------------------------------- Yields the following html results page: Return to Staff Home Page ISBN: 0195099702 Title: "Why Ask My Name" Subtitle: Anonymity and Identity in Biblical Narrative Series: Publisher: Oxford University Press (Oxford and New York) Date of Publication: 0000-00-00 Price: Author or Editor Name: Reinhartz, Adele Topics: Bible History of Religions Feminist and Womanist Approaches Other Methods -------------------------------------------------------- Return to Staff Home Page ISBN: 031221250X Title: New Stories for Old Subtitle: Biblical Patterns in the Novel Series: Publisher: Macmillan Press (London) Date of Publication: 0000-00-00 Price: Author or Editor Name: Fisch, Harold Topics: Bible Hebrew Bible / Old Testament Talmudic and Rabbinic Literature Literary Approaches ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Return to Staff Home Page ISBN: 031221250X Title: New Stories for Old Subtitle: Biblical Patterns in the Novel Series: Publisher: Macmillan Press (London) Date of Publication: 0000-00-00 Price: Author or Editor Name: Jay, Elisabeth Topics: Bible Hebrew Bible / Old Testament Talmudic and Rabbinic Literature Literary Approaches
