Date fields in Postgres & PHP

Hi!!! I am using php with postgres sql, it works fine, but i need to make a query, where selects all the regs wich where captured in a particular month, in the table i have a field called capdate wich is date type... the question is, how can obtain the month (or even only the day or year) in my query (select * from table where...(???) ) Thanks for your help Greetings
