I used a different approach for a similar task: I have generated a
sendmail alias that points to an externale filename, ie, in "aliases"
file:
mailinglist::include:/path/to/a/conveniently/hidden/file
Then the php page
a) executes the query that gives the e-mail address
b) save those address on /path/to/a/conveniently/hidden/file
c) executes a SINGLE command mail('mailinglist@localhost',...)
This way the execution time fro the php page is negligible, and all
the dirty work is left to sendmail. I'm sure this setup is usable with
many others MTAs.
Of course this has the side effect that the "mailinglist" alias can
also be used for sending traditional mails. This could be seen has
a benefit, or as a untollerable spam risk...
In the second case, you could do something to hide the "real"
mailing list address when you build the message envelope, or
inhibit the acceptance of messages from other sources than the
website using sendmail's rules. And of course - but I assume that
on each and every mail server administrated properly this is already
done - block finger, EXPN & VRFY functions, and the like ;-)
HTH!
Best regards...
