remote oracle and php4 installation

hi. i've installed oracle8i 8.1.6.xx on a linux 2.2.16 redhat6.2 machine. on another (the webserver), i've installed redhat6.2 with apache1.3.12, php4.0.2. i want to link the 2 machines, in order to use oracle in php4 i've installed in this second machine the client part of oracle installation in /usr/local/oracle i have set up variables in /etc/profile like ORACLE_HOME, ORA_NLS=(nothing), ORACLE_SID=test, NLS_LANG=nothing. i've tryied to set LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libpthread.so but it gives me some errors and httpd doesnt starts. when i start httpd it dumps core. what can i do? what files are red from the client libraries?
