Tom,
I have no direct experience with the Sybase Open Client since it doesn't
appear to be widely availiable, however, I believe you need to reference
an interfaces file. Check the open client docs for a reference to an
environment variable $SYBASE.
With that said, you might have good luck with FreeTDS (www.freetds.org).
If I understand correctly, it supports all current versions of TDS up to
7.0, and can connect to any sybase or MSSQL server (don't know about
MSSQL 2000 though).
