php 4.03pl1 + mysql 3.23.27-beta won't communicate

Hello,
I have installed PHP 4.03pl1 and earlier I had apache 1.3.14 with modssl and
mysql 3.23.27-beta up and running perfectly on the machine. However, I cannot
get PHP to communicate with my mySQL database. I am running OpenBSD 2.7 on an
i386 architecture. This is from my apache error_log;
/usr/libexec/ld.so: Undefined symbol "_mysql_init" called from
httpd:/usr/local/paket/apache/libexec/libphp4.so at 0x403cd1e0
PHP is compiled as a DSO.
Grateful for ideas on what can be the error so that I can start searching and
fixing the problem.
