Regardless of any compatibilty issues, you still cannot just use the return
from mysql_db_query without checking it first.
If you check the result, and then do a mysql_error() if it's zero, you'll
find out what's going wrong.
At that point, you can might be able to start complaining about
incompatibilities.
Your code was only working on PHP3 because you were lucky enough for mysql
not to be returning an error!
