Marc,
You do not explicitly need DB2 Connect for an ODBC connection - ODBC vendors
provide a wide variety of driver architecture, some which 'piggback' on
existing native client layers, and some that bypass them entirely.
Openlink's Multi-Tier is one example of an architecture that bypasses the
native layer, replacing instead of adding to the native layer.
Unfortunatley we don't support AS-400, but I imagine that you can find a
vendor that provides such drivers. The point I'm trying to make is, ODBC
is an alternative to native connectivity which, depending on the ODBC vendor
can be faster, slower, more or less functional than the native dbms vendors'
connection layers - dbms vendors core focus is on the dbms, not necessarily
protocols to aid in communication.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Andrew
