PEAR stands for "PHP Extension and Add-on Repository". It is an attempt to create
something similar to Perl's CPAN. The website is found at http://pear.php.net although
there is currently very little information there. If you have a fairly new version of PHP
you will find a PEAR directory in your distribution. In that there are a number of
additional functions for things like DB abstraction, ecommerce, etc. The DB abstraction
layer looks promising since it will be distributed along with PHP so if you use you can be
sure your code will run just about anywhere. I haven't looked at any of the other
functions yet. Unfortunately, there is very little documentation on the entire project at
the moment so you have to dive into the source and figure out how to use the stuff.
PS - Sorry for the confusion earlier. I accidently replied with the wrong subject.
