<guess> MYSQL_SOCKET is used if you specify 'localhost' as the server name. PHP communicates via the socket instead of via tcp/ip in this case. This might only look for socket files in standard locations. If mysql.default_socket is specified, that is used instead of MYSQL_SOCKET (eg the socket file is in a non-standard path like /usr/local/mysql/ or something). -- Postgresql & php tutorials http://www.designmagick.com/
