Oracle installs are not that difficult, Xwindows notwithstanding, if you know what to do. Send questions to theoracle@delphi.com. :) Jess

I think this really sucks though. The Oracle install requires x-windows. Personally, I hate to load x-windows on a production server. That really just chaps my hide and I just thought I'd let everyone know that. I think, this question was posed quite often, but I didn't find a good answer in the archives... The problem: I'm trying to compile PHP (4.0.3pl1) on BSD/OS 4.1 with Oracle Support. Now, I thought, PHP knew about Oracle-specific stuff, but it doesn't. 'configure' is asking for the installed Oracle-DB. But the Oracle-DB is running on another WinNT-System and I am not sure, if they have any header files lying around there. You must have installed Oracle client. You can access almost (depend on version) Oracle server. Is it nescessary to have Oracle locally available to compile PHP or is there a way to work around. It would contradict to my understanding of 'Database Access over Network' in which I should not be required to know everything about the database internals in order to compile something to communicate with the database. No contraddiction: Oracle client connect to Oracle server via your network Could I use some generic DB support to have a kind of limited access to an Oracle DB ?? When they permit to access an Oracle server... I think yes!
