php4 and oracle OCI8 error messages

I'm having trouble getting error messages from OCIError
All this does is print the php error message and not what I tell it to echo.
$connection = OCILogon ("user", "pass");
if ($connection == false){
echo OCIError($connection)."<BR>";
exit;
}
Can anyone help please.
