IF the operating system, hardware (intel/alpha/PA-RISC) and MySQL
versions are the same, and you are certain that all the tables in the
database are closed by MySQL it should work.
I would shut down the database servers, copy the files, restart the
servers and test it. One thing I know of that will not be copied
unness you copy the mysql database, is your permissions. (GRANT/REVOKE)
They are stored in the mysql database, which I would be nervous about
moving around. I guess if you only have two or three databases on the
system, you might get away with moving the entire data directory. (The
three tables are mysql, test, and the one you are working with.)
I suggest you try to copy the files. At worst all you have to do is
drop the database, then use some kind of dump/load process.
phpMySQLAdmin provides an option to create a query that will create and
populate a table for you, or you can use mysqldump/mysqlimport to move
the data. See sections 12.3 and 12.4 of the MySQL manual.
