MySQL - Unable to save result set...

In writing webpages which make changes to a database, this error comes up:
Warning: MySQL: Unable to save result set in /home/bailey/proj/accounts/etc/Userbase.php on line 677
It appears after looking at the database that the database has been
changed though...
The command that does this is the following:
677 $sth = "update user set $field='$value' where
loginname='$loginname'";
678 $result = mysql_query($sth);
And I do connect to the db at the beginning and disconnect at the end.
Any help?
