Persistant DB connections & NAT/masquerade

It seems that when persistant connections are used through a Linux
masquerade (or any NAT for that matter) if the connection times out in
the masquerade box the PHP module does not detect this and continues to
try and use the connection. Anyone out there experience a similar
problem and/or know how to fix it?
