That's what I've been doing. I'm "dabbling" in a GPL'ed web app which
I'm trying to learn a few new tricks. It's frustrating at times but it
is a way of learning "the hard way". (I've got a PHP book which I've
found extremely boring and don't read).
The benefit of a (good) book is that you could (hopefully) learn from
someone able to teach well. Rather than pouring over the dry php
manual.
