Alas, I don't have access to the php.ini file.

I have no idea. :-(
If I enter text that contains quoted material, it inserts into the
database just fine. If I try to enter HTML like <a
href="/index.shtml">Home</a>, the form just sits there saying
transferring data. It finally gives up and nothing gets added to the
database. Flashes up an error box saying the document contained no data.
My intention is to be able to enter news articles that can contain
links, etc and are also xhtml compliant (href attributes quoted). If I
enter the URL without the quotes around the attributes it works fine
(just tested it) but I do want the output to be XHTML 1.0 compliant.
Looking forward to solving this. Having fun working with PHP (thanks!)
and look forward to learning more advanced techniques.
