Anyone have any idea of what the syntax error in this statement is?

It worked fine until I added the tricky part:

(!eregi("^([a-z0-9_]|\\-|\\.)+@(([a-z0-9_]|\\-)+\\.)+[a-z]{2,4}$",$email)
