Use gd 1.4 FreeType-current in PHP3 or the most recent PHP4 CVS tree. If you need help finding gd 1.4 (before recent patent announcements with the compression algorithms used with Boutell's gd libraries). I haven't had much time to play with PNG or any capability of TTF in working with PNG's. Anyone have any comments?
