Hi Ramus, First of all congratulations on your upcoming wedding. You will receive a post card from us soon! > >I don't see any reason to think PHP is involved here; the >processing of .htaccess files is an Apache function, not >something PHP does. Unless the .htaccess file contains >PHP-related directives..? Why do you think PHP is at >fault here? > I realise that you deal with all sorts of people, and although I would not consider myself a guru, I have been playing with this stuff since Apache 1.0 and PHP/FI. The process I went through was as follows: We where running Apache 1.3.6 and PHP 3.0.3. The auth functions worked as expected. I upgraded to 3.0.9 an found that the auth module failed and we have the corresponding error messages in the apache error log (Refer to bug report) I reconfigured and recompiled apache with 3.0.8 only to find the same problem. I then backed down to 3.0.7 to find that all was OK. We are still running this version (eagerly awaiting the full release of version 4). I have been contacted by other people who have seen my bug report asking if I had a fix because apparently 3.0.11 has a problem too (although I have not have time to try it). >BTW, you *can* do auth for such directories -- but only >by putting the auth directives into an appropriate ><Directory> container in the main config files. That will >work while the .htaccess files are broken and disabled >with AllowOverride None. > Our server (with several hundred virtual hosts) uses both methods. I don't remember trying the config file directives, only the .htaccess files so I am not sure if that worked or not. There are too many directories dependant on the .htaccess files to add them all to the config file. Ramus I realise that you are pushed for time. If I can assist by setting up a broken system for you to telnet to, just let me know. Keep up the good work!
