This is the solution the bug #1354 I reported before. I have
magic_quotes active system-wide which was causing problems with the parser

I had the same problem as you reported on bug.php.net. I fixed it by putting the
line
set_magic_quotes_runtime(0);
in the page prior to setting up the XML parser.
