SIGSEGV in mysql_connect

Running Apache 1.3.4/MySQL 3.21.23/PHP 3.0.12 on Red Hat Linux 5.0 with Kernel 2.0.33 Apache and MySql have been running for quite some time and I am now adding PHP. PHP seems to work okay except when I connect to MySql using mysql_connect('localhost'); (with anything in the parens) in which case it cores. The PHP module is compiled in Apache.
