database connectivity

respected, i need some help. i hav installed mysql using rpm,and installed php 3 as binary source.now i am unable to connect to mysql. i hav also configured php using this statement ./configure --with-mysql=/path to mysql and i saw it mysql support ..yes. when i write the statement mysql_connect('localhost','root',''); and run the program i get the message 'unsupported mysql_connect() funtion' pls help me and tell me what i hav to do to get connected to database. is that so i hav to install binary version of mysql rather rpm. or is that ok if i install mysql using rpm mysql. ordinary php programs r wroking fine but when it comes to database programming,it is givin this error. expecting your reply, bharat. --- K.Bharat Kumar.
