Hello,
With the advent of the proliferation of hand-held devices I forsee a world
of new uses for PHP based applications. One of type of applications would
run offline from the rest of the world.
Things like queueing product orders to be submitted and synchronized with a
remote server whenever the handheld device user is able would be brilliant
as they solve many real world problems.
However to make this work, it is necessary that there is some easily
redefinable user interface that works seeminglessly in a wide variety of
present and future handheld devices.
A WAP/WML based interface would be ideal because that is the current
standard that is solidifying for handheld based applications. To make that
work offline there must be a Web like server that may run in the handheld
so that using a WAP browser the user may interface with the necessary
applications regardless of the type of handheld device.
The content of the applications could be generated at run time by PHP like
middleware that would also serve as means to interface with a local DBMS that
would hold information pending to be synchronized with the remote server.
A combination of WAP browser + WAP server + middleware + DBMS is not a very
light combination to run on an handheld, but if there are any efforts to
make light versions of these components, the possibilities are huge.
We already have available DBMS for Palm devices (at least I heard of IBM
DB2 and Oracle). WAP browsers are starting to pop. I don't know about
light weight WAP servers, but that is possibly the simplest component.
What is remaining is middleware that connects the WAP server to the DBMS
with custom applications that generate WML based interface. This is where
I see a possibility for PHP to enter in the game. It may be used to generate
content on demand of arbitrary type and it can interface with different
DBMSs. It only has to be cut and tailored to be made much lighter than it
is.
What do you think? Any interest/intention to make PHP also play in this
field?
