The correct way to do the error reporting is to return an error State and use mysql_error to get the error. This behaviour make many things impossible including the example I have given. All functions in mysql use mysql_error to report errors why does php change this. It is a problem of the php script to handle the error condition. No php function should report errors direct to stdout. mysql_connect does not know where in the html document the script is Most times the Error msg just isn't displayed korrekt. The script knows how to report the Error in a correct way.
