persistant socket connections

Does PHP3/4 currently have support for persistant socket connections?
I know there are persistant database connections but I am in the need of
a persistant socket connection to interface with a custom application
server. Is there current or planned support for this? If not I'd like to
try my hand at writing some support for it so any suggestions or
comments would be appreciated.
