If you're using rpms, make sure gd-devel is also installed.
Some linux distributions do not install *-devel files by
default. If it is installed, you may have to direct php to
the gd install directory in the configure line, something like
--with-gd=/path/to/gd-install-dir
Sometimes a certain flavour of linux installs stuff in
non-standard places.
