Run:
$ gdb <prefix>/bin/httpd
...
(gdb) r -X
The -X will cause Apache not to fork, so that you can
generate a backtrace.
This is probably just another instance of a bug believed to
be fixed (Thies, you probably remember the SMP-issues on
Linux WRT time out).
