(Sascha, I really apologize for cc'ing you directly; it's just that I
imagined you might wade through the hundreds of php-dev messages and not
catch this one at all)
I've posted Bug 3456, but since it hasn't drawn any response at all and
it's kind of a showstopper for us here, I'm offering to trace and pick up
what's wrong. The offending script is inserted below - I can get it to
kill php as a standalone binary and as an apache module. _However_, if I
turn on debugging (#define DEBUG 1) it stops the problem completely.
A backtrace does suggest it's a memory allocation error, but - well - look
at it:

Since I'm not very familiar with the internals, perhaps someone could
point the way or at least hint me on - yeah, I know, DEBUG works. But..
Is 3.0.x dead and forgotten, and that's why we're not supposed to take
care of these old bugs and move on to 4.x?
