Forgot to mention my configuration:
PHP as Apache module, built with:
CFLAGS=' -ggdb3' \
./configure \
--with-apache=../apache_1.3.12 \
--with-mysql=/usr/local/ \
--with-gd \
--with-ttf \
--enable-memory-limit=yes \
--enable-track-vars \
--enable-debug=yes
