PHP 3.0.15 & mysql & RedHat Secure Server 3.1

I am trying right now, without much success, to build the php module
for the RedHat Server Server (which as I understand is just apache
+ mod_ssl). Otherwise, the system is basically an 'out of the box'
RedHat 6.1 install with patches and the latest mysql installation.
php configures and compiles without error messages. However, as I
try to include the module and restart Apache, it will either not
start at all (without error message), or dump core and exit.
Any hints? What to do next? How to debug this problem?
