Was able to get the compile to work by doing the following:
1) reordering the ./configure line to have --with-jpeg-dir=[dir]
*after* --with-gd.
2) editing the Makefile to ensure 1 instance of each library, and ordering
libraries as such -lgd -lpng -lz -ljpeg
Works great now.
