While I do agree that there could be a shorter or more convenient way to identify class variables and members, the current solution is simple, easy-to-understand and very readable. One of the great strengths of PHP is that it is so darn easy to read - especially when compared to languages that have adopted strategies similar to the ones that you propose. (Perl, C++, etc..)
