I don't think I understand. Why then would it not work without this fix but
suddenly start working when I added that line? Also when I displayed the
hex value of the pointer it was null. Has this already been fixed in cvs?

The fix you applied is not needed.
MS_SQL_G(get_column_content)= php_mssql_get_column_content_with_type
is called correctly during initialization.
