Bug description: configure fails with zlib error =>1.0.9 but zlib is 1.1.3

I have: zlib 1.1.3,
gd 1.8.3,
jpeg-6b,
freetype 1.3.1,
libpng 1.0.6.
How do I get configure to believe zlib is 1.1.3?
