Hi,
PHP right now is using a memory allocation cache and I am not sure how
much it actually helps performance.
If anyone has time to mess around with its settings and post some
benchmarks it would be of great help.
The main way to test it is to change:
MAX_CACHED_ENTRIES in php4/Zend/zend_alloc.h and try out different values.
This #define means how many blocks of each size class PHP will actually
cache. Right now it is set to 24. It would be interesting to see the
difference between settings such as 1 and let's say 128.
If anyone has time to test this with a few general purpose scripts and
either UNIX time in cgi mode or with Apache's ab that would be great.
Make sure you compile PHP without debug of course otherwise the results
will be inaccurate. This is the default unless you specify --enable-debug.
You can check php_config.h for ZEND_DEBUG 0 to make sure it really is
disabled.
Any results would be greatly appreciated.
