Unofortunately, i think it would be difficult to modify expat to parse sgmal as well, and still have it produce useful results with xml. You should check out the source. It's in ext/xml/ in the php4 source tree. If it is critical to you to be able to parse sgml, you might look at adding an sgml parser to php. One such parser is James Clark's SP: http://www.jclark.com/sp/index.htm Writing extensions to php is not supposed to be that difficult. For more info see the README.EXT_SKEL, apidoc.txt, and apidoc-zend.txt files in the php source.
