Are you sure you did a completely fresh build?
Best is to reopen the original tarball and start ./configure from scratch.
More advanced version of the above can be done if you have the right tools installed:
./cvsclean
./buildconf
./configure --disable-debug
However you need to have the right version of autoconf and friends for this to work
