Sorry, it was developed on a system where bash is the default shell, and
although the first line in that script says '#!/bin/sh', in my system it
is in fact just a symlink to /bin/bash. On your system, '/bin/sh' probably
doesn't recognize the syntax used in that script. Of course, it would
help somewhat if you'd tell what your command line was, it could be a bug
in the script itself, but it's really just a tool for other programmers,
who are supposed to be able to write one line the right way after the
fifth try (meaning, if it was a typo on your part, I most probably do
not bother myself with fixing the script).
Anyway, I'd be grateful if you could fix all the 'bashims' out of the
script, or alternatively, someone giving me a temporary access to a system
running the true and original '/bin/sh', so I could do it myself. But,
honestly said, if you can't fix the script yourself, you shouldn't be
using it or writing a PHP module. Learning a lot of more about Unix
systems, their history and and differences, and some nasty quirks in the
implementation of some functions in basic c-libraries you take for
granted to behave reasonably, should be on the top of your list of things
to do. Someday, I might even myself follow my recommendations.
There might be some other problems regarding the version of awk you are
running, there are a few different ones hanging around (awk, nawk, mawk
and gawk comes to my mind), and I'm not sure if all of them are able to
run the scripts ext_skel needs, because I'm unable (or too lazy) to test
it. :(
But, if you have bash installed somewhere on your system, try changing the
first line of ext_skel pointing to it.
