I can confirm that PHP 4.0.1pl2 still has this bug. If you call
session_start() on any page where there is 0 registered variables then you
get the above warning.
Page 1

<?php
session_start();
session_register('test');
?>
Page 2
######
<?php
session_start();
session_unregister('test');
?>
Page 2 results in the warning being logged. This does not affect sessions
via mm, but not files. PHP configured with mm support (--with-mm) and
session.save_handler = mm ; set in php.ini

session.save_path needs to be a path to a file for mm. Like
/tmp/session.sem
