This sounds like a web server configuration issue. I bet it is only configured to apply authentication to GET requests or something. If you stick a <?phpinfo()?> tag on your target page and scroll to the bottom, you should see whether your web server is sending an "Authorization" header and whether your browser is sending the appropriate reply. Compare the HTTP Request and Response headers between a GET and a POST and I think you will find that no authentication is done on the POST.
