i had this problem with php4.0.1pl2 on slackware, i suppose this is somewhat of a bug in the included mysql client libraries in that release. I fixed it simply by recompiling and specifying the location of my own mysql client libraries and it seems to fix everything, i considered writing a bug report but didn't see any other postings about it until now.
