Hi- I'm the primary force behind BitKeeper (though there are a pile of us
at this point), and I was pointed to a thread here about BK and licensing.
There was a very valid point raised in the thread, the issue of using
quasi-free software and having to depend on it. For what it is worth,
that is addressed in the BKL (BitKeeper License) and you do get the
source, so while it is true that BitMover could screw you on future
versions (by changing the license) it is not true that you are at risk
by using BK as it stands today. You can use it and continue to use it
forever under the terms of the BKL - once we release it, we can't change
those terms for that version. And if we go out of business or even stop
actively supporting BK, it automatically becomes GPLed. The point is
that we are very aware of the reservations that some people have and we
have worked hard to address them. If we haven't done enough, we want
to know about it.
I was wondering if you wanted me to reply further to the issues raised
in that thread or if you would prefer that I just let you hash it out
on your own from here. I'm not aware of the dynamics of this list so I
don't want to barge in here if that is not wanted. Can someone let me
know what is appropriate?
Thanks,
