Dear Fellow PHPers,
In yet another of our billion builds of PHP 4, we have realized
that there is another issue that should be clarified in the installation
documents (or, perhaps, that the installation process needs to be
modified). It appears that when one builds PHP as a CGI (standalone),
modifications are made to the source tree that prevent it from being
installed subsequently as an Apache module -- PHP builds but it can
not be installed -- the process dies dealing with the make target
install-sapi. Somehow the installation process appears to want to
find libraries in a directory named libs (which was used for the
CGI build) rather than in .libs, which is the directory normally used
for the module build. Probably something in the environment is being
irreversiably modified during the CGI build, but we have not been able
to determine what it is. Either this glitch should be fixed, or the
installation documents should make it clear that you must start with a
fresh copy of the source tree.
Keep up the great work...
Thanks and Cheerio, Rick Rodgers & Ziying Sherwin
