phpize and C++ files

phpize is not working with the C++ build process (the CXX macro isn't
there). My extension works properly with buildconf in the main tree, but
self-contained it doesn't. Is there a simple way for me to fix this?
Sorry, I'm not very well-versed in autoconf / automake, let alone the PHP
system--pointers to the appropriate files would be a great start.
