pspell is the same thing as aspell, as far as you are concerned, except the author totally changed API. You can think about it as a wrapper for aspell, although that is not exactly taht. You need a recent version of aspell and a compatible version of pspell for that to work. Basically, php uses aspell through pspell, which has a new (and hopefully not to be changed again) API.
