Stream to browser being closed before session write handler can be called

OK, I spent a while on this one, and I need some help. I realize the attached is a bit more than 10 lines, but it does nothing other than print as each session handler is called. The command line version seems to handle this script just fine, but apache module appears to close the stream to the browser before the write handler can be called. I have some interesting results when stepping through execution under gdb, but am not sure what they mean. If they would be of any help, I can make them available... I would really like to be able to fix this bug, but I am just in over my head...
