I'm gonna grovel at the bottom of this reply.
in the mean time, the INSTALL documentation uses /usr/local for mysql,
and does not indicate that you should do /usr for the standard MySQL
install from RPM's, and it does not mention that the mysql code has to
find both libraries and header files...could that possibly be updated for
idiots like me?
In the mean time, do you know what happens when someone with root priv's
does an rpm -e MySQL? Locate still says it is there for quite some time.
That person is now in trouble, mainly because I didn't notice.
I am red faced and embarrased for not noticing that before I reposted
the bug. I would still have disputed the documentation details, but I
would have gotten a compile to work.
I humbly apologize and beat myself with 100,000 lines of code on
GreenBar paper. I screwed up! Grovel, grovel, grovel.....
