I don't know about anybody else, but my kernel is in the *right* place, and has always been
there, for I play with the kernel a lot, and I have to make sure it is where it is supposed to be.
And older versions of php worked fine while newer ones do not.
It does not look like a php bug, because configure can not find certain files it should, but we need
to figure out how to fix it
