OK, I just tried it with a different machine, a fresh Apache and
php4-200007300345 using the QUICK INSTALL (Static) and it works here
too.

My include_path is
/web/phplib/pre:./:/web/phplib/post
The only PHP related things I do in my httpd.conf are:
DirectoryIndex index.php3 index.php index.html index.htm index.shtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps
# looks I should change this, but I don't use it...
<LOCATION ...>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</LOCATION>
and adding domain specific include directories to include_path on some
of my VirtualHosts. ns2 is served out of the default configuration, but
the problem happens on VirtualHosts too.
In my production php.ini I've set error_reporting to 7, sendmail_path to
/usr/sbin/sendmail -t, and changed some settings in [Session].
I don't think I've done anything unusual with the configuration files, I
like to make things work with the default values, so they will probably
be the last thing I will try in my testing.
I have a working system using config files from the distributions. I've
started to add in the differences betewen my ./configure choices and the
ones in the QUICK INSTALL (Static). So far I have added all the apache
options except for ssl and it is still working.
The modules are:
--enable-module=info, log-referer, rewrite, vhost-alias,
and
--disable-module=userdir
(Yes, I did type --enable... for each item, I just shortened the list
for this message.)
I am in the process of downloading mod_ssl, then I will add in the ssl
module and test again. That probably won't happen till tomorrow. I
need to do some real work...
If it still works I will recompile php4 with my choice of options, but
since that only adds --with-mysql=../mysql --with-gd and
--with-config-file-path=/web/conf I don't expect any of those to cause
my problem.
If it still works I will copy the resulting httpd file over to a
production server and try it with the existing config files.
If it still works, then it must be a problem with the RH 5.2
compiler or libraries, which I am using on the production machines.
(Yes I know it is old, but "if it works don't fix it." These machines
have been rock solid, with uptimes over 100 days at a time. I am
starting to upgrade to SUSE 6.3 which is what I am testing on now.)
If anyone has a better idea on how to track this down, please let me
know.
I will report back to the mailing list with this bug ID once I have
identified the difference between the two builds. Since the 'out of the
box' default setup works here too, you can probably close this bug now.
Thanks!
